Changes for post-OSAA reclassification
The OBDA Required Literature List has been completely revised to reflect the major changes by OSAA that go into effect for the 2006-2007 and later school years. League classification has been changed from four to six classes. Previous classifications and OBDA lists no longer correspond to the new leagues. As we transition from the old classification system, it is important to note the following that will be in effect for at least the next two years:
6A schools may play from the 6A or 5A list or previous year's class IV lists
4A schools may play from the 4A or 3A list or previous year's class III lists
As always, schools may play from any list at a higher level than their class
Second (less advanced or younger) bands from a school should play from the list one classification lower than their school's class. Third bands should play two levels lower.
Any school may elect to play and be adjudicated at a level lower than their OSAA classification. However, they will not be eligible for state qualification or in competitive events.
The current OBDA adjudication system will remain in place.
2A Scale - 1A / 2A schools, 2nd bands from 3A & 4A, 3rd bands from 5A& 6A.
3A Scale - 3A & 4A schools, second bands from 5A & 6A.
4A Scale - 5A & 6A schools.
It should be stressed that OBDA's substitution policy will continue to be quite liberal as we make this transition. Individual leagues, districts, and invitational festivals are welcome to adapt this system as needed for their own purposes. However, bands wishing to qualify for the OSAA State Band Championships must adhere to the requirements below.
The new list is intended for high school contest and festival use. There is no specific literature list for middle school groups since they do not have the requirement to play from a list for festival. It is hoped that someone will step forward to compile a suggested list specifically for middle school use. Contact OBDA president Mary Lou Boderman if interested in heading up this project.
The "advanced" list from previous years has also been eliminated. It is assumed that any band playing advanced grade V and VI standard and new literature more challenging than that found on the 6A list will submit a request to substitute that will be readily granted.
Required Use
Classification shall be based upon the use of the required list for festivals and contests. Schools may enter any classification level regardless of enrollment or OSAA classification, but may not play in a class below their OSAA classification in a competitive (ranked) contest. If they do, they will not be considered in the rankings and will be playing for rating only.
Bands participating in, or attempting to qualify for the OSAA High School Concert Band Championship must play from the list corresponding to the OSAA classification (see exceptions above), or may play from a higher classification's list. Bands only need to program one selection from the list to fulfill this requirement. Bands electing to play for ratings or critique only may choose their selection from any classification.
Content.
This list has been revised based on input from well over 100 band directors who have participated in the 2001-2006 annual band literature workshops held at Lewis & Clark College. A draft of the 2006-2008 list was sent to one dozen of Oregon's most respected college and high school directors for critique. Additions include compositions that regularly appear on selective music lists around the country and new literature that workshop participants feel is worthy of inclusion. Titles normally remain on the list for four to six years.
The list is purposely kept rather short to encourage exploration of new composers and compositions. Because of this, many standard band compositions are routinely rotated off the list each revision period. Titles from previous years may be used without a request to substitute. A full list of previous compositions appears at www.lclark.edu/~dbecker/litlist.htm.
Substitutions.
Directors wishing to substitute a composition that has not appeared on a current or past list may submit a written request by mail or Email to the OSAA State Band Contest Chair. A decision will be quickly made, sometimes in consultation with the OBDA literature list chair, and returned in writing. The director should then forward the permission to the contest chair of the event in which they are entering. This is particularly important for groups who wish to qualify for the OSAA State Band Championships.
OBDA makes this list available for use with the OMEA Large Group High School League, District or Invitational Contest Format, available through the Oregon School Activities Association or from Dave Becker.
Requests for substitutions should be submitted to the 2008 OSAA State Band Contest Chair:
